Ippodo Mail (No. 57): Ippodo Tea for First Timers
With Ippodo's large selection of blends and varieties of Japanese teas, it can be hard to know where to start. On the other hand, as a beginner, trying new teas and exploring new aromas and flavors can be the most fun of all. In this mailing, first, an introduction to our teas sold in trial size packages. After that, two different tea sets recommended for newcomers.

Kumpu Sencha One-Pot Size (10 grams)

Kumpu Sencha One-Pot Size (10 grams)
¥350

Sencha is by far the most popular green tea within Japan and a wonderful introduction to our teas. When drinking sencha, expect a refreshing balance of rich aftertaste and crisp green tea astringency. Our recommendation, Kumpu, has a sweet, breeze-like aroma and a soft flavor. Here it is offered in a one-pot size bag of loose leaf tea, which is perfect for trying sencha for the first time.

Assortment of Seasonal Teas (incl. Nodoka Matcha)

Assortment of Seasonal Teas (incl. Nodoka Matcha)
¥7,450

Another favorite, matcha (green tea ground into a fine powder) is starting to become quite well-known outside Japan. For people trying matcha at home for the first time, we often recommend something like our spring-season-only Nodoka variety--a smooth, fragrant, and less bitter matcha. In this set, Nodoka comes with the recommended whisk and tea strainer, in addition to the beginner-friendly roasted tea hojicha and sencha.

(Discounted Reservation Price) Shincha Sencha and Tekiro Gyokuro set

(Discounted Reservation Price) Shincha Sencha and Tekiro Gyokuro set
¥4,650

For those new to Ippodo tea, a good place to start is with the sencha released right after it is harvested. This tea is called Shincha, and is only available for the short period after its harvest in early May. At Ippodo, we are currently taking reservations for Shincha at a discounted price until April 30th. At this link, Shincha comes with a gyokuro, which is a tea variety with an almost dew-like umami taste. Try them both in this set for an introduction to some of the more delicate Japanese green teas.
