Asked and Answered Vol. 1: Chasen Whisks

This edition of the Ippodo newsletter is the first of a new series named Asked and Answered. In this series we will take frequently asked questions and answer them in detail, while introducing related items.
In this first volume, we tackle the chasen bamboo whisk, used to make matcha tea.

Why would someone choose to use a chasen to make matcha over a normal metal whisk?
The answer is that the fine bamboo tips do a great job of quickly mixing matcha powder with water, minimizing the amount of lumps left in the drink afterwards. These tools are made by hand from natural bamboo, so a little care will help them last as long as possible.

What is the difference between the two sizes of chasen?

What is the difference between the two sizes of chasen?
The 80 tip chasen is actually made from a slightly smaller bamboo stalk, which is noticeable in the base, where you grip the chasen. (See the picture above!) This makes it easier for people with smaller hands to hold. In comparison, the 100 tip whisk is made from a slightly larger stalk of bamboo and will be easy to grip for those with medium-to-large size hands. Either one will make whisking matcha a breeze.

Chasen-tate (Whisk Stand)

Chasen-tate (Whisk Stand)
This simple but ingenious tool is built to hold the chasen in a wide shape, separating the outer and inner tips as it dries after rinsing. If left to air dry, the chasen will shrink a little, so place it on the stand and display it proudly on your shelf to let everyone know you whisk a mean matcha.
