About Ippodo

About Ippodo

Located in the heart of Kyoto, Ippodo Tea Co. has been providing the highest quality Japanese green tea for over 3 centuries. More than just a retailer, Ippodo is a multi-faceted tea company directly involved in the procurement and blending of carefully selected tea leaves. Our teas are of the finest class, cultivated in the lush fields of Kyoto and the surrounding area. This region is renowned for producing the highest grade of green tea in Japan, thanks largely to its mild misty climate, mineral-rich soil and near-perfect balance of sunshine and rainfall.

Just as tea is blessed by Mother Nature, it is subject to her varying weather patterns. Overcoming these variations is a major hurdle for tea producers trying to provide a consistent flavor. Yet, providing a consistent flavor is Ippodo's forte. Drawing on over 300 years of expertise in blending, Ippodo is famous among its patrons for providing a high quality taste that is consistent not only throughout the year but from year to year. Our aim is to ensure that our trademark taste - the taste that our customers know and love - is inside every package that leaves our plant.

To us, tea is not only a beverage, but an experience to be enjoyed and cherished. Sipping on a relaxing cup of tea while reflecting on a special memory; enjoying a nice conversation over tea with a friend or loved one - regardless of the scenario, we want your tea experience to be a satisfying one. We hope you will take the time to explore and discover all the delicate pleasures that each green tea has to offer.

To help you learn more about Japanese green tea, we have set up a hands-on tearoom -the KABOKU Tearoom - adjacent to our main store in Kyoto. We invite you to come and experience firsthand the techniques for brewing the different types of green tea. We also offer Tea-Making Workshops, which can be held at our main store or at a location of your choosing. The occasions on which a particular tea is suitable; the recommended tea for a favorite aunt with a particular taste preference - whether it's a simple question or a more complicated one, we are more than happy to try our best to answer any inquiries that you may have.

At Ippodo, we are committed not only to providing fine quality teas; we sincerely hope that we can become a source of tea inspiration to you!

Matcha: an Ippodo Story --

In Matcha: an Ippodo Story, director Michael McAteer transports viewers to Kyoto, Japan for an intimate matcha experience with Ippodo Tea. Owned and operated by the Watanabe family for over three centuries, Ippodo has upheld the culture of matcha since they began handpicking tea in 1717. The short film is the first to document Ippodo's story. It beautifully depicts the cycle of tea from harvest all the way through to the Japanese tea ceremony, and the family at the heart of it all.
